Prenatal Care and You

Prioritize health

Studies over the past century show that prenatal care ensures better patient outcomes, says the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Why? Your obstetrical team counsels you on nutrition, exercise, vitamins, and your baby's development, while also detecting potential complications through careful testing, examination, and monitoring. The Office on Women's Health says that without prenatal care, mothers are three times as likely to have birth complications and have low birth weight infants.

All the providers at Premiere OBGYN in Pembroke Pines, FL, encourage mothers—and potential mothers—to be informed on their GU health. They provide compassionate counseling on the entire birth process from conception to delivery and beyond.

Your first prenatal visit and beyond

It includes a pelvic examination and determination of when your baby is due. Your physician will review your medical, surgical, and obstetrical history and order lab tests such as a Complete Blood Count (CBC), urinalysis, and measles titer.

Until 28 weeks, you'll see your provider once a month. After that, until your due date, you and your baby will be monitored more closely. Your doctor will measure and track your weight, vital signs, and uterine size, listen to your baby's heartbeat, and evaluate the position of your placenta. Ultrasonic examination measures your baby's size and can tell you if you are carrying a boy, girl, or twins!

Remember, if you are 35 or older, you carry a high risk of pregnancy and birth complications. So, your doctor at Premiere OBGYN will likely schedule you for more frequent office visits and lab work.

As delivery approaches

You will discuss your labor and delivery options, medications, and anesthetics. The doctor will examine your cervix to determine if it is thinning out and preparing for the birth of your baby.
