Irregular periods, frequent urination, and pelvic pain can be quite a nuisance to deal with and quite concerning. These are often signs of uterine fibroids. Rather than suffer in silence, one of our practitioners may run tests to see if the problem is fibroids and find an appropriate course of treatment. But in the meantime, you may want to look at the most frequently asked questions about fibroids answered by our doctors at Premiere OB/GYN, serving Hollywood, Plantation, Pembroke Pines, FL, and the surrounding regions.

What Are Fibroids?

First and foremost, it's important to understand what fibroids are. They're growths that appear in the uterus. They're benign and can grow anywhere from the size of a small bean to the size of the entire uterus. It's possible to have one fibroid or multiple ones. Women of reproductive age are more likely to develop these.

What Are the Signs of Fibroids?

Much of the time, a woman may never know she has a fibroid because they don't always cause symptoms. For the woman who does have symptoms, the issues that arise vary based on the location of the fibroid or fibroids.

For example, heavy menstrual cycles are common with fibroids. The bleeding is sometimes prolonged and possibly has clotting. Pain in the pelvic region is also a common symptom. It's possible to have frequent urination. It may feel like a struggle to urinate at times, despite having the urge to go. Other possible signs include the following:

  • Anemia
  • Fatigue
  • Painful intercourse
  • Constipation

What Causes Fibroids?

The exact cause of fibroids isn't known. However, it's believed that heighten levels of growth factors or hormonal changes are responsible. Research indicates that women with high levels of progesterone and estrogen are more likely to have fibroids.

Your age, weight, and race tend to play a role, and so does a vitamin D deficiency. Women who consume lower amounts of green vegetables or who drink alcohol habitually have a greater risk.

How Are Fibroids Diagnosed?

Sometimes, a doctor from one of our practices, either in Hollywood, Plantation, or Pembroke Pines, FL, can tell you have fibroids during a routine pelvic examination. In other cases, a physician may find them on an ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Laparoscopy or hysteroscopy are other possible testing.

Medications can be used to control the symptoms. In other cases, surgery may be suggested.

At Premiere OB/GYN, serving Hollywood, Plantation, and Pembroke Pines, FL, and the general vicinity, we can help you manage your symptoms and assist with infertility if fibroids are causing it.

A common, painful and frustrating gynecological condition is uterine fibroids. Benign growths stemming from either the internal or external Fibroidsuterine walls, fibroids are fully treatable. At Premiere OBGYN in Pembroke Pines, FL, your 5 board-certified physicians help women feel better and regain normal reproductive and sexual function.

How uterine fibroids happen?

Also called leiomyomas, uterine fibroids are vascularized growths of varying sizes, shapes and locations within the female reproductive tract. While most fibroids are located within or right on the uterus, some fibroids may invade the cervix and ovaries.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists report that fibroids typically grow in women of child-bearing years--30 to 40 years of age--and for some reason, African-American women seem more prone to them than do their Caucasian counterparts. Causes of fibroids remain something of a mystery; however, some researchers suspect that alcohol usage and hypertension may contribute to their development.

Symptoms of fibroids

For some women, fibroids cause few to no symptoms. Other women, however, feel very ill, exhibiting:

  • Pain with sex
  • Lower back pain
  • Abdominal bloating
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Constipation
  • Infertility
  • Miscarriages
  • Anemia
  • Menstrual pain
  • Heavy periods

Fibroid symptoms may escalate depending on their size and location and how quickly they grow.

Diagnosis and treatment

At Premiere OBGYN in Pembroke Pines, FL, your OB/GYN doctor will examine you and note your symptoms. Ultrasound imaging and/or a hysteroscope examination helps visualize fibroids, along with their location and size. Laparoscopy is a mild surgical procedure that introduces a lighted scope through a small abdominal incision so the doctor may discover fibroids on the outside of the uterus.

With a definitive diagnosis, your doctor will formulate a care plan suited to your needs and projected outcomes. Common treatments are:

  • Birth control pills
  • IUDs (intrauterine devices) which release progestin
  • Myomectomy, or surgical removal of fibroids
  • MRI-guided surgery
  • Hysterectomy (a last resort solution for very large fibroids)
