Choosing the Right Birth Control Method

What Birth Control Method is Best for You?

When you are choosing a birth control method, you need to make sure you choose the right one for you. The excellent medical team at Premiere OB/GYN offices in Hollywood, Plantation, and Pembroke Pines, FL, are awaiting your call to discuss your family planning options.

Why Birth Control?

It may seem obvious as the reason for birth control is in the name, but birth control can be used for other things as well, such as controlling your menstrual cycle, decreasing PMS symptoms, treating endometriosis, and improving acne.

Our doctor can tailor your birth control needs to your unique body. That is why when you need birth control, it's best to call our doctors and schedule a health visit. Our doctors will ask for a detailed health history and ask about your menstrual cycle history to help you choose the proper birth control.

Types of Birth Control

According to the knowledgeable medical staff at Premiere Obgyn offices located in Hollywood, Plantation, and Pembroke Pines, FL, there are many choices for family planning available to you. Here are the types of birth control available:

  • Hormonal - Prevents the release of your monthly egg/treatment preference, birth control pills
  • Barrier Methods - Includes male and female condoms/the sponge/ diaphragms/spermicides
  • IUD - IUDs or Intrauterine devices/copper or hormones

Our doctor places a small t-shaped device in your uterus, and you should not feel this in place. It lasts ten years. Copper IUDs deliver a small dose of copper to prevent an egg from being fertilized. Hormonal IUDs deliver a dose of hormones that prevent pregnancy. A couple of different kinds of birth control can last up to six years.

  • Fertility Awareness Method - FAM

This type of birth control uses ovulation planning to determine safe days for intercourse. This method is not foolproof and can result in a greater chance of pregnancy.

There are two methods of emergency contraceptives available. The first is the copper IUD. This IUD can be inserted up to five days after intercourse by our doctor for effective control.

The second is Emergency Contraceptive Pills, ECP, or morning-after pills. Our doctor can prescribe this form of birth control. You may find this form of birth control at your local pharmacy. These pills are also effective by day five, but the sooner you take ECP, the more effective they are in preventing pregnancy.
